Obama in Fayetteville and Powell’s Endorsement

Senator Barack Obama was in Fayetteville yesterday.  He spoke to a capacity crowd at the Crown Coliseum.  Being so close to a military base, there were many military personell and their families in the audience.  Obama was introduced by an army wife.  This speech was aimed at creating unity accross party lines and he tied this in to a military theme.  “They (soldiers) have not served a red America or a blue America — they have served the United States of America.”  There were no attacks on the McCain campaign (or at least none that made it onto the news).

He recognized General Collin Powell’s endorsement during the speech.  Although McCain tried to dismiss it, this endorsement is significant.   This is a high ranking former member of the Bush administration who not only supports Obama, but criticizes Bush policies, likely to continue under McCain, according to Powell.  Powell is the most recent Secretary of State to make an endorsement.  Given how much things have changed in this decade, it makes the Secretary of State endorsements McCain has recieved insignificant in perspective.
